About Karen Timberlake
Hi. I am a professor of chemistry and have been teaching chemistry for 34 years at Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys, California. I received my bacherlor's degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and my master's degree in biochemistry from University of California at Los Angeles.

For many years, I have been interested in how students learn chemistry.  New ideas in pedagogy and teaching methods have become a central focus in both my classroom and my text books.  I have developed a student-centered  classroom where I use PowerPoint slides to give mini-lectures and learning checks.  During the class time, students work in study teams on worksheets that require them to apply new concepts.

"The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds."   Anatole France

My husband, Bill, is a chemistry instructor at Los Angeles Harbor College.  When we are not teaching or writing books, we are hiking, playing tennis, and traveling.

Classes I Teach

Students in the chemistry classes of Professor Karen Timberlake at Los Angeles Valley College will find class notes, assignments and comments for the following classes:

Chemistry 51 LAVC
Karen Timberlake teaches this chemistry class at Los Angeles Valley College for allied health including nursing, respiratory therapy, dietetics and liberal studies. We investigate the concepts of chemistry from inorganic to biochemistry as they apply to our health and environment.  Laboratory experiments  give students hands-on experience.
